What is Walking Netball?

First developed in the United Kingdom in 2017, it is now one of the fastest-growing participation sports in England, with over 250,000 registered participants.

Not only is it great for physical health and fitness, it allows people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, and agility levels to prolong their sporting careers, retain their participation in netball, enjoy a fun sport with friends and family, and have fun at their desired level of competitiveness both on and off the court.

Walking Netball provides another great opportunity to reunite with teammates, meet new people, and form new friendships. Mixed teams are welcomed. Accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, Walking Netball fosters an inclusive environment in a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie while staying active in the great game of netball.

Walking Netball will be an important part of the Tiare Netball Celebration at its inaugural staging, which is likely to become a regular event. It combines the health benefits of regular physical activity with the enjoyment of a social and supportive environment—a great option for those looking to stay active and engaged.

Rules

  • Games are 4 x 8-minute quarters

  • No running or jumping

  • One foot must be on the ground at all times

  • Players can take two steps while in possession of the ball before it must be passed or shot for goal

  • Players can hold the ball for up to 4 seconds

  • Maximum of three males on court at any one time - one in the defence circle area, one in the mid-court area, and one in the shooting circle area

  • Rolling substitutions during play with no limit to substitutions

  • Free pass when an infringement occurs

  • When defending, a player must be 1 metre from the opposition player
